Maintenance improvements can dramatically affect margin through downtime reductions. Downtime can run from $1,000 per hour for the average operating cost at low sales price for a small capacity plywood plant, to over $16,000 per hour for a larger OSB plant at higher sales returns and low operating cost. To take a plant from 80% uptime to 90% could equate to between $1 million to $14 million in yearly margin depending on product, the size of the plant, its operating cost, and sales price. Through maintenance improvements, increased plant operating capacities can provide as much a margin increase as downtime. There are plants that operate at less than 80% capacity even if they have very little downtime.
