Water Tank Design for Powerplant
Evergreen Engineering designed several water tanks, the largest of which is 108’ dia. and 40’ tall at the rim. The roof on the large tank has no internal or external supports except the framing you can see welded to the top of the roof. The roof was built on the ground and lifted into place by two track cranes. The roof weighed in at just under 150,000 lbs. and the rigging was 30,000 lbs. per crane; that means each crane had about 105,000 lbs.

The pictures of the cranes, the roof, the rigging, and various stages of the lift show the size of these tanks. I think the picture that gives the best feeling for the size of the tank is taken from inside – you can see four stories of catwalks for everyone to work on. Also, if you look carefully, you’ll notice that BOTH cranes had to walk the load in order to get it positioned over the roof.
